Coming up Yellow Part II

WORK IN PROGRESS: YELLOW PART I

When I was younger my favorite color was blue (still is) and my least favorite color was yellow. I always thought, yuck, wearing yellow makes people look sick. To this day I don't own a single article of clothing that's yellow but that's about to change. Basically I never gave the color yellow a fighting chance and thought I never would. HOWEVER, my mind was blown yesterday When I saw the above photo from NYTimes Fashion and was in awe of the beautiful shades of gold that in theory should not look good... but somehow... and so I'm deciding to give the color yellow another opportunity to wow.

My next weaving project will be a naturally dyed kimono style poncho/ jacket. Really simple design to let the yellow become the focal point.  I'm using 100% organic cotton: I snagged the warp yarn from Voices of Industry who sourced from small business cotton farmers in west Texas. And the weft yarn I chose is beautifully variegated in texture to create a subtle woven landscape of yellow cotton.

I'm dyeing the yarn with Osage wood (maclura pomifera) shavings which I've never tried before but had previously ordered from Maiwa in Canada. Equally inspired by the beautiful Osage photo in Kristine Vejar's natural dyeing book

Very excited for this project and I figure (worst case scenario) if I don't like the yellow then I over dye it with indigo and voila... green!   Wish me luck!

COOL THINGS

A closer look at the otherworldly costumes designed by Marcel Dzama for the NYCBallet The Most Incredible Thing at Lincoln Center.  Got tickets with a friend for April and I can't wait!

New previously unreleased Bon Iver song: Haven, Mass

Obsessing over these Mur Lifestyle basket variations here, here, and here. Gotta love that canadian dollar right now.

These fruit face planters are beyond.

Still obsessed with this Beyonce 2014 live performance.  Can you imagine performing for 16 straight minutes, no breaks, so many different songs.  A true performer/ artist.

Essential facts about the upcoming Anthony Bourdain food hall at Pier 57.  Can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned.

COOL THINGS / STONEWARE

Recently I've been kind of obsessed with handmade stoneware dinnerware. The subtle texture and neutral palette of stoneware is totally dreamy yet at the same time earthy and utilitarian. Don't get me wrong, at the other end of the spectrum stoneware can become cheesy and wonky but when it's right, it's right.  Some day I will own a set of you. But for now, dreams of plates.

DAHU PLAYLIST / WINTER 16

Every few months I compile a seasonal playlist that I then play over and over and over... until I get sick of it and feel the need to make a new playlist.  Consequently whenever I hear any of the old playlist's songs (even years later) I can associate that music with a certain time of my life. It ends up working quite well. And eventually I can revisit a playlist and rediscover and fall back in love with a song once more. What are you listening to these days?  I'm always searching for new music suggestions so leave a note with your favorites.

ACE & JIG SPRING 2016 RTW

I love these long layered looks in bold colors and geometric patterns for spring. They're drapey with a relaxed fit which is my current mode right now.  I'm always in awe of Ace & Jig's masterfully woven and carefully considered textiles (made in India by artisans) and with textile names like punch, raffia, and funcheck you can't really go wrong. These are my favorite looks from their Spring 16 collection. Although, all these outfits seem pretty "season-less" in that I could see them transition perfectly into fall and winter with no problem. I think that's why Ace & Jig have become a cult classic. Needless to say, I'd wear any of these in a heartbeat <3
